Vowels and Consonants Worksheet

Beginning Vowels Worksheets (A E I O U)

• Sounds at the beginning of words are the easiest for kids to isolate, so we start their 'sounding out' practice by asking them to select the pictures with beginning sounds that match a given vowel. There is one worksheet per vowel.
• Identifying the vowels in a group of letters. The goal is instant recognition of vowels.
• Kids are asked to circle the pictures that have particular short vowel sounds, like the 'a' in 'bat'. There is one worksheet for each vowel.

Short Vowel Worksheets

• When kids start to learn to read, they begin with matching sounds to letters. These phonics worksheets help kids practice matching pictures to short vowels.

Long Vowel Worksheets

• Here are our phonics worksheets on identifying long vowels, like the 'a' in 'cake'. Kids circle the pictures of words with long vowel sounds. There is one worksheet for each vowel.

• Vowels can make a slightly different sound when followed by an r; these are called "r-controlled vowels". These worksheets give practice recognizing r-controlled vowels and the sounds they make.

Beginning Consonant Worksheets

• These worksheets help kids recognize and write consonants, consonant blends and digraphs, starting with the easier consonants and moving onto the more difficult ones.
• Kids are given a mix of letters and are asked to circle the consonants. The goal is instant recognition of consonants.

Ending Consonant Worksheets

• Ending consonants are tricky to identify. Match the given consonant with the picture that ends with that consonant sound. Practice the consonant sounds until they instantly recognize the sounds of each letter.

Consonant Blends Worksheets

• A consonant blend is made up of two or more consonants next to each other in a word, where those combined consonants make a distinct sound, such as 'fl' in 'flower' or 'dr' in 'drums'. In these worksheets circle each consonant blend that starts the pictured word.
